Truth AND Dare
Work / Life balance. It’s a nice thought… but it’s built on a bad equation. It assumes “work” and “life” are two equal halves, like a scale you can perfectly balance. But work isn’t equal to life — it’s just one slice of it.
Your life is made up of eight key areas. They don’t need the same amount of your time, but they do need enough attention to give you a sense of satisfaction. Ignore one for too long, and it can spill into the others — leading to burnout, frustration, envy, or other challenges that chip away at your overall well-being.
1. Relationships
2. Finances / Money
3. Career / Work
4. Health
5. Personal Growth
6. Fun / Recreation
7. Environment (Home / Work)
8. Spirituality
In one or more of these areas may lurk a painful truth — something you might be too scared to admit, but you’ve known for a while. And if you’re going to save the life you forgot you wanted, you need to get honest about what’s not working for you.
Then, I dare you to do something about it.
Finding Your Truth
Here are some examples from each of the eight areas to help you get started. If your truth isn’t listed, choose the example that’s closest to it and use that dare as your guide. If more than one truth shows up, pick the one that’s been creeping into your thoughts the most.
Once you’ve named your truth, take one strong, bold, and daring step that honors it — AND… complete it within 3 days.
Want to raise the stakes?
Share this email with someone close to you and ask them to do the Truth AND Dare challenge with you. Then, tell each other exactly what your truth is and the action you’re committed to taking.
1. Relationships
Truth:
You’ve been excusing someone’s behavior that’s actually hurting you.
You’re staying in a friendship/relationship because of how long you’ve been together, not because it’s healthy.
You’re avoiding telling someone something important they need to hear because you want to avoid conflict.
Dare:
Have one real conversation that either sets a boundary, expresses something you’ve been holding back, or directly addresses what’s been bothering you.
2. Finances / Money
Truth:
You know exactly where your money leaks, but you keep telling yourself “it’s not that bad.”
You’ve been avoiding looking at your actual debt balance.
You’re not charging enough for your work.
Dare:
Do one action that tangibly improves your financial position — cancel a subscription, raise your rates, set up a payment plan, or create a budget you’ll actually follow.
3. Career / Work
Truth:
You’ve outgrown your role but you’re avoiding updating your resume or networking.
You’re not giving your best because you’re no longer invested in the work.
You’re staying “busy” with work instead of facing another area of your life that is falling apart.
Dare:
Take one bold career step you’ve been avoiding — send the email, make the call, pitch the idea, or create boundaries.
4. Health
Truth:
You’re ignoring warning signs from your body.
You keep telling yourself you’ll “start Monday” but never do.
You’re making choices that directly undermine your long-term health and you know it.
Dare:
Make one immediate upgrade to your physical well-being — book a check-up, schedule your first workout in months, or clear the junk food from your kitchen.
5. Personal Growth
Truth:
You’ve been avoiding the book, course, or mentor you know would help you grow.
You let fear of failure keep you from learning something new.
You say you want change but keep repeating the same patterns.
Dare:
Commit to one learning or growth action — read a chapter, watch a workshop, sign up for the class, or find a coach.
6. Fun / Recreation
Truth:
You can’t remember the last time you did something just for joy.
You’ve made “productivity” your default setting and fun makes you feel guilty.
You’ve been saying “I’ll do that when things slow down” for years.
Dare:
Schedule a fun activity for yourself that is purely for enjoyment — and treat it like a non-negotiable appointment.
7. Environment (Home / Work)
Truth:
You’re tolerating a space that drains your energy.
Your home or workspace is cluttered and it’s killing your focus.
You keep saying you’ll “get to it” when you have time.
Dare:
Choose one area and make it better today — clear a desk, deep clean a room, or add something inspiring to your workspace.
8. Spirituality
Truth:
You’ve been neglecting practices that center you.
You’ve been questioning your beliefs but avoid exploring them.
You’ve lost a sense of connection to something bigger.
Dare:
Spend time in whatever makes you feel grounded and connected — meditation, prayer, time in nature, or quiet reflection.
So now what?
You’ve got your truth. You’ve got your dare…
And you’ve got three days.
Ever upward.
